Because of COVID-19, Eurovision Song Contest 2020 was canceled. Therefore, the annual music competition Söngvakeppnin or "The Song Contest" was not held in 2021 because Iceland had already chosen the song they wanted to represent Iceland. Söngvakeppnin is one of the most significant programs RÚV has each year, so they had to fill in the slot. That's how the show Straumar was born.
